Bimatoprost (Lumigan) is a synthetic molecule similar to prostaglandins but is often described as a prostamide. It is considered one of the strongest medications available for lowering intraocular pressure.

Efficacy Compared to Others

Studies suggest that bimatoprost tends to achieve slightly greater pressure reduction than other drugs in its class, and it sometimes succeeds in lowering pressure in patients who have not responded well to latanoprost.

Side Effects

Local side effects—particularly conjunctival redness (hyperemia) and eyelash growth (which is even utilized in a cosmetic product for eyelash enhancement called Latisse, based on the same active ingredient)—tend to be more common and pronounced with bimatoprost use.
