Latanoprostene bunod (known commercially as Vyzulta) is a relatively innovative prostaglandin-based medication that works via a dual mechanism.
Dual Mechanism of Action
The medication breaks down in the eye into two active components: one is latanoprost, which works through the normal mechanism to increase drainage via the uveoscleral pathway; the second is a molecule that releases Nitric Oxide (NO), which relaxes the tissue of the primary drainage system (the trabecular meshwork), thereby increasing normal drainage as well.
Clinical Advantage
Thanks to its dual mechanism, the medication can lead to a significant reduction in intraocular pressure, sometimes more than a standard prostaglandin preparation, while maintaining a once-daily dosing regimen.
