Brimonidine (also known by the brand name Alphagan) is a common medication from the alpha-agonist family for chronic, long-term glaucoma treatment.
Efficacy and Combinations
Brimonidine is highly effective in lowering intraocular pressure and is usually administered twice a day (whether combined or alone). Some studies have suggested that the substance also has a 'neuroprotective' effect, beyond just lowering pressure. It is frequently combined with timolol in a single bottle.
Side Effects to Note
Similar to other drugs in this class, brimonidine can cause dry mouth, fatigue and drowsiness in adults, and a local allergic reaction in the conjunctiva and eyelids (red, itchy, and swollen eyes) requiring discontinuation of the treatment.
