Latanoprost (known commercially as Xalatan) is the oldest and most extensively studied medication in the prostaglandin analogue class.
Efficacy and Usage
The medication is highly effective at lowering intraocular pressure and is administered as a single drop, just once a day, preferably in the evening before bedtime (as its effect on pressure is optimal when used this way).
Safety Profile
Latanoprost is considered very safe to use, with a relatively low rate of eye redness compared to some other drugs in this class. Like other PGAs, it may cause eyelash growth and pigmentation changes in the eye area and iris.
